Florian Kuhlmann (b. Düsseldorf) has worked since the mid-2000s where contemporary art meets the network. One question runs through almost everything: what happens to the image, to value, and to the public sphere once they move onto the screen. Over time the work has turned that question in many directions — hybrid spaces and virtual exhibitions, an economy of the free copy, street works, off-spaces and festivals, curated shows under the digital3mpire, and, since 2021, work made on the blockchain.
Read across two decades, a cybernetic figure emerges: systems with feedback — a market that writes itself into a picture, bots that speak, a doubling price that turns buyers into co-authors, a chain that makes rules into infrastructure.
